The Helsinki Festival is the largest art festival in Finland. It is the annual event organised in late summer. The aim of the festival is to make art more accessible for everyone.
This year of 2016, it is held from 19.08 to 4.09.
The year of 1968 was the time where the Helsinki Festival was established. A festival, which had existed before establishing the Helsinki Festival, was Sibelius viikot being active in 1951-1965.
During the festival, many performances and event are organised. Among them are these connected with theater, music, dance, art exhibitions, circus, movies. One of the most important event is 'Night of the Arts'. In this time, all spaces in Helsinki are open to artists who want to express themselves .
The main concerts are held in so-called Huvila Festival tent.
In this year's festival programme can be found the Poetry Moon - an international literary festival which theme is The Future. It offers many workshops, poetry spread in the whole city and also Children’s Poetry Moon in Annantalo. On Korjaamo Theatre’s Stage Festival visitors will experience a mixture of theatre, film and music art.
Music programme includes such artists and bands as Jazz Electrovnture, Ernest Ranglin & Friends, Gasandji/Nomfusi, Viapori jazz, Hector, Jimmy Webb, Afro Celt Sound System and more.
Children can find their place in the secret garden with special attractions: a long-legged acrobat or a unicorn, nibble on a little piece, during the event of sea lives where recycled plastic receives new life, children are invited to create huge marine animals or during happy cinema.
